Default Finding a DFC or DFM citation at the National Archive Centre

Can someone, more up to date than me,tell me if there is a quick way to find the file reference number for a particular airman's decoration? In the old days you had to write to the RAF Records centre att Innsworth who gave you a reference number that then had to be cross referenced with the NAC file system. Is it still as laborious as that?Is there a quick way now?
    Many Thanks B.

If its any help I use a very reliable and efficient researcher who can locate such records. Sorry to say I can offer no method to deploy in person.

TNA reference numbers are normally listed in Tavender's 'The Distinguished Flying Medal Register for the Second World War'.
