Default 75 Sqn pilots, March 1942

    Hi all

Back on my Lubeck Raid research again and I wonder if anyone could possibly please help me with the first name initials (don't need the full names, just the initials would do) of the following 75 Sqn pilots on that raid.

    Sgt Evans
    Sgt (E G D ?) Jarman (RAAF?)
    F/O (A W ?) Doel
    F/L Hill
    F/S (I J ?) McLachlan RNZAF
    Sgt McPhail
    P/O Leggett
    W/C (R ?) Sawrey-Cookson
    Sgt Shepherd

As always, any assistance much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Ian,

EGD is correct for Jarman. Both A705 and A9300 online at NAA.

    Best,

To put a slightly different complexion on the mysterious Sgt Evans (presumed RAF), I offer my full notes on this crew over the full period of his time on 75 Sqdn (presuming that there were not in fact TWO Sgt Evans involved!) As the 75 Sqdn ORB did not give initials, service numbers or service of NCOs through this period, it is extremely difficult to pin down true identities of a large number of such crew members.

EVANS, Sergeant X (RAF?) (& crews).
.... Pilot 75 Sqn X April 1941 to X April 1942. Originally crewed with P/O G W Hamlin as 2P, on ops 20/4 (early) 7/41, then vanished till (presume the same Sgt Evans!) popped up again as captain, on ops with own crew from 23/11/41. Crew members were 2P) Sgt Bright; N) P/O H J Carter; WOp) Sgt Viner; FG) Sgt Tinkler; RG) Sgt Weyman; on ops with this crew till 27/12/41, with one crew change this date: 2P Sgt Bryant. Next on ops with entirely new crew, 8/3 8/4/42, as follows:- 2P) Sgt M F G Fraser; N) Sgt A I Smith; WOp) Sgt J O H Nichols; FG) Sgt S A G Shaw; RG) Sgt J W Hinton. R/G changed to Sgt L Chambers 9/3, to Sgt R W J Trengrove 12/3, to Sgt N E Whiting 25/3, to Sgt Smith 28/3. Rest of crew taken over by Sgt Fraser from 12/4/42. Possible that more than one Sgt Evans involved here!! Was there an I J Evans?

    OK, thanks Dave

Like you say, with Evans being a fairly common name there could have been two of them at the same time so I'm not 100% sure yet. Maybe I J Evans is a possibility? but I think I'll leave that as a query until anything more definite maybe turns up.

    Thanks again.
