    Default E.D. Todd, RCAF J/24069

For a reader of my web site: looking for information on the crash that killed P/O Eric Douglas Todd, RCAF, reported lost on operations on 21 May 1943. He is commemorated on the Ottawa Memorial, may have been in a Mitchell.

    Hi Bill
"They Shall Grow not Old" by Allison & Hayward confirms it was a Mitchell from 111 OTU based in Nassau, no serial number given. The aircraft was lost 100 miles NE of Nassau, New Providence. Along with Todd, 3 others were lost.

    Hello,

    Fri 21 May 1943
    COASTAL COMMAND
Navigation exercise - creeping line ahead search.
111 Operational Training Unit, RAF (Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas)
Mitchell II FR365/CD - took off at 1745 captained by Fg Off J E Thomas, RAF, being the only one of five aircraft engaged on the five-hour exercise which failed to return. Last heard from at 1951 about 120 miles NE of Nassau (position 'KNMS3610'). Searching aircraft and ships could find no trace of FR365 or its six crew, all of whom are commemorated on the Ottawa Memorial. Although an exercise, four depth charges were also carried for use against enemy submarines, should they be sighted.
