Default W/O Alexander Thomas Wainwright died 3rd March 1945

    Hello,

Does anyone have any information concerning the demise of W/O Alex Wainwright 3rd March 1945? He is on the CWGC site as one of those with no known grave and comemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. He flew a tour of ops on Stirlings with 90 sqn in 1943 and is reputed to have been on an SOE operation when lost, but I cannot find him in Chorley's BC Losses.

    Any info would be welcome.

    Best wishes,

    Sam

You won't find him in Chorley as he was not with Bomber Command, the clue is in what you have already said, SOE missions.

If you check his name on www.cwgc.org, you'll see he was with 299 Squadron when he died.

Googling 299 Sqn brings you to bruno's wonderful site about 38 Group RAF and 299 Squadron.

There are six RAF men from 299 Sqdn on the Runnymede memorial for this date and Henk on the forum touched on this before:

Lost on Stirling LJ996 on SOE operation to Norway.

I knew this name was familiar, I came across him while looking up names on my local war memorial, it was F/Sgt Rome I was looking up, at the NA but hadn't actually got round to typing up the ORB entries.

LJ996 was one of a couple of aircraft flying sortie 'Flank 9', the other was EF323 which was carrying 18 containers and 3 packages which were dropped at 60 39N 08 55E. The aircraft took off at just after 22:00 on the 2nd with EF323 returning at 06:25.

The ORB records the a/c as X9-N with EF323 as 5G-F.

    Dear Dennis, Finn and Al,

Thank you all for the first class information. I'm touch with W/O Wainwright's Rear Gunner frorm his tour with 90 sqn and I'm sure he'll be very interested when I pass the details on.

Thanks again for your speedy responses, I'm away to check the websites mentioned.

    Best wishes,

    Sam

F/Sgt Ronald Rome is my father who is named on Romiley Memorial - I would be pleased to give any information you may require for your research.
