Default Spitfire IX L.F. Long Range

Yesterday, I recorded sorties by Danish pilots in No. 1 Squadron from the Operational Record Book. For some of the sorties during the Spring of 1944 it is specified that the aircraft flown was "Spitfire IX LF LR", e.g.

I have never come across this abbr. before. Would this be modified Spits with internal fuel tanks behind the pilot or "just" Spits modified to carry jettison tanks?

    Hi Mikkel,

sory I am not able to find my copy of Spitfire history by A. Price to check IX LF LR but I personally believe it was the second case - IX LF carrying LR auxiliary jettison tanks.

    Thanks Pavel,
I have checked both Price and Morgan & Shacklady. Both indicate that the tests on installing rear fuselage fuel tanks were later; MK210 is tested in September 1944 at Boscombe Down.

I agree with your assumption but find it odd that you would specify "LR" if it is external tanks. But then again, I guess that the ability to carry these demanded a modification of the aircraft.
