I am a new member here and am very much enjoying the site, everyone seems so knowledgeable so I am hoping that someone can help me with this.

I am trying to discover more about my cousin's first husband, Sgt Frederick Anderson 626653 12 SQDN ROYAL AIR FORCE who died 12 June 1943 on the operation to Dusseldorf from Wickenby. Andy, as he was known, was the Mid Upper Gunner on Lancaster Mk-1 - W4373 PH - F.

I am gradually piecing together his training and so on but I am stuck as regards this episode which my cousin has recently told me about. She tells me that in 1941 Andy joined a group of airmen and that they were sent as guard escorts to Murmansk Russia with a consignment of spares for Hurricanes which had been sent there. (She actually says Spitfires but from what I have read I believe the planes were Hurricanes). I have read quite a lot about the Hurricanes in Murmansk but I cannot discover anything about the Airmen in the Guard Escort. Please can anyone help, I should be very interested and grateful.

Pauline.
