Default Flt Lt Richard Eric James Holmes RAFVR

Richard Eric James Holmes was born in India in 1898. He was commissioned into the Indian Army and in 1920 was awarded the Military Cross. He retired and moved to England. In 1939 he was commissioned as a Flight Lieutenant in the RAFVR. He died in Wirral in 1941 and is buried at Grange Cemetery Hoylake Wirral. Can anyone tell me anything more about especially the circumstances of his death.

Listed on CWGC service number 76344, died 10/01/1941.

Flight magazine 6th February 1941 shows him as 'Died on Active Service', although actually lists him as 'R E H Holmes 76344'.

Thanks Martyn. Can anyone tell me what the exact definition of 'Died on Active Service' is. Does it mean 'Killed in Action' or does it perhaps also include deaths from natural causes while in service?

Not sure of exact definition, but it is not KIA or Killed on Active Service (killed on a non-operational flight etc). Died on active service will include natural causes, and probably accident outside of service activities.
