    Default 'R' Depot RCAF 1944

    Hi all,

I would like to ask for information about this unit.
From Chris I know: 'R' Depot was located at Houghton Gruen, Torquay from September 1942 to February 1946.

But what was purpose of this depot? It was used as PDC centre?

    Any additional information much appreciated.

    Hi Pavel

There was an "R" Depot at Warrington which was used as a PDC for Canadians returning home after the cessation of hostilities

    Cheers

    Pavel,

    Toronto newspaper article, August 1945:

    32,700 RCAF MEN STILL OVERSEAS

Torquay, Aug. 29 - The RCAF repatriation depot here said today that up to Aug. 31, 29,727 RCAF personnel will have been repatriated since VE-Day, leaving some 32,700 still overseas.

The total returned by the depot here will amount to 19,237 by the end of the month, including 220 members of the Women's Division. Among the remaining 10,000 were 4,000 personnel from the Canadian bomber group in Yorkshire and 2,000 former prisoners of war who went home directly on their release.
