Default Sqn Ldr K.K.Majumdar DFC, 268 Sqn

I wonder if anyone has any information about Sqn Ldr K.K.Majumdar DFC and bar, who flew with 268 Sqn between June and September 1944.

Trained at Cranwell he was awarded his first DFC whilst flying as CO of 1 Sqn IAF in Burma; his second DFC was awarded, I believe, for his service whilst with 268 Sqn. After returning to India he was killed in an accident during a flying display in 1945.

My particular interest is in his time with 268 Sqn.

    TIA
    Brian

    Hi Brian

I have a few details about his time in the RIAF, but not much on his time with 268. However, you are correct to state that he got his Bar for his activities with the squadron:

    DFC Citation - 10th November, 1942
Squadron Leader Karun Krishna MAJUMDAR, Indian Air Force, No. 1 Squadron
Early this year this officer commanded the squadron during its activities in Burma. He led two unescorted attacks on enemy airfields in Thailand and attacks in support of the army in Tennas
serim; he also completed valuable reconnaissances during the retirement from Rangoon to the Prome positions.

    You've probably seen these:

(the citation for the Bar to the DFC)

If you would more details for his time in the IAF let me know

Many thanks for the two links Amrit, I'd seen the first but not the second. I'd actually posted the query on behalf of Somnath Sapru in India, who has been helping me with another project - a case of quid pro quo. Off board I've also been directed to Colin Ford (via http://www.rafweb.org/Sqn266-270.htm) who appears to be the squadron historian, and with any luck he should be able to provide Somnath with the information he needs.

    Default DFC and Bar citations

MAJUMDAR, Karun Krishna, S/L (Ind 1555, Indian Air Force) - No.1 Squadron, Indian Air Force - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 10 November 1942. Following text from Flight, 10 December 1942; relevant Air Ministry Bulletin probably has more.

"Early this year this officer commanded the squadron during its activities in Burma. He led two unescorted attacks on enemy airfields in Thailand and attacks in support of the army in Tennasserim; he also completed valuable reconnaissances during the retirement from Rangoon to the Prome positions."

MAJUMDAR, Karun Krishna, S/L (Ind 1555, Indian Air Force) - No.268 Squadron - Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 23 January 1945. Public Record Office Air 2/9043 has citation drafted when he had flown 68 sorties (102 operational hours). Identical text published in Flight, 8 March 1945.

"This officer has completed many tactical reconnaissance and photographic sorties. His keenness for operational work and his skill on difficult and dangerous missions has always been outstanding. Before the advance northwards in France, he completed exceptionally valuable photographic reconnaissances of the Seine bridges, in the face of heavy ground defences. He has also participated in long tactical reconnaissances on which he was several times intercepted by superior formations of enemy aircraft. His skill and courage have always been outstanding."

That's brilliant Hugh, and I'm extremely grateful for the additional reference. I know Somnath will be overwhelmed by the information you and Amrit have provided.

    Default W/C K K Majumdar DFC and Bar RIAF - No.268 Squadron

    Brian,

If you require information regarding service by W/C K K Majumdar DFC and Bar RIAF in 1944 with No.268 Squadron RAF, please contact me off-board

I have copies of original recommendations for award of Bar to DFC with much more detail than given in Gazette and other notices. I also have specific details of sorties flown whilst with No.268 Squadron and rationale why he ended up there with the the Squadron.

Good day Colin - nice to meet you. I've already directed Somnath to your link via the 268 Sqn history, but I will copy your message to him. In view of the recent thread about SPAM, when he does contact you his address is ssapru21ATyahooDOTcom.

    Regards
    Brian
