    Default SOE Mission to Poland 4/5.5.44

    Hallo everybody
    I,m looking for a details of mission flown on the night 4/5.5.44 by 148 Sqn's Halifax BB438 FS-S lost that night in vicinity of Mielec, Poland.

    5.5.1944: Aircraft: Halifax, BB438-S, "S-Sugar"

    T/O Brindisi 20.07 hrs for arms drop to the Polish Army. A/c hit by flak in the vicinity of Tarrow and then at 01.00 hrs was attacked by German fighter aircraft. A/c crashed onto house and farm buildings at Sadkowa Top in the municipality of Borowa, Poland killing five members of the crew and Cecilia Podleszanska the 15 year old daughter of Andrew and Bronislawa Podleszanskich. Two escaped and were captured.

    The bodies of the crew were buried near to the crash site and were transferred to the military cemetery at Krakow Rakowicki Cemetery, Poland after the end of the war.

    W/O. Eric Alfred Aldred, R.A.F.V.R. - Pilot.

    F/Sgt. Michael Edwin Agar, R.A.F.V.R. Flight Engineer.

    F/Sgt Ralph Dawes, R.A.F.V.R. Wireless Op

    F/Sgt Norman Wilson Johnstone, R.A.F.V.R. Air Gunner.

    F/Sgt Ronald Albert Menday, R.A.F.V.R. Air Gunner.

    Sadly, the ORB records that this was to have been the last op. of Aldred's tour.

    Thanks for reply PeteT and david Gunby. My main point is call sign of this mission. That night 334 SD Wing sent to Poland 15 aircraft, I know most of the destinations exept Aldred's. It's also interesting what fighter from 11./NJG5 was doing so far from its base.
