    Default 29/01/1945 F/Lt.G.E.Cassie Typhoon Ib RB271

    Hi !

On 29/01/1945 F/Lt.G.E.Cassie made a crashlanding with Typhoon Ib RB271,due to an engine failure, at Deurne airfield B.70 (Antwerp, Belgium).
Was this pilot George Edward Cassie 108836 (he was awarded a DFC on 14/09/1945) ?

Many thanks in advance and best regards from Belgium

    Yes it was.
Thomas and Shores Typhoon and Tempest Story lists this aircraft as 413 RSU at the time so may be records not up to date. RB271 was damaged by strafing during Bodenplatte on the 1st and fitted with new engine and fuel tank repairs.
Chris Woodcock s 193 Squadron book quotes from ORB "28th Jan 1945: Flt Lt Cass Cassie, who had recently returned for his second tour with 193 Sqn, was lucky to escape without injury when his aircraft (RB271) overturned when the engine failed during take off. The accident led to returning aircraft being diverted to B79 Bergen op Zoom."
And yes it does say 28th not 29th, as does the Movement Card according tp Chris Woodcock.
Cassidy was posted to 263 squadron as B Flight Commander during the first week of March 1945 (263 ORB).
His medal set was sold at auction several years back and can still be found on line.
    cheers Peter

    Default RB271 28 Jan 45

The Form 1180 Accident card gives RB271 as on charge 413 RSU at the time of the accident. Presumably Cassie was on loan for a bit if test flying.
