Default F/Lt Russell Murice Mathieson RNAF

    Hello again,
I wonder if our NZ friends could help me please. I have a RNZAF Spitfire pilot F/Lt Russell Maurice Mathieson, from Hawkes Bay.
I do not have is service number but he flew with 130 sqn in 1943, possibly 66 sqn before this and later was on 222 sqn. Any postings please.
He was the brother of F/Sgt Ian Edgecombe Mathieson RNZAF-413447, who was KOAS on 130 sqn on 25-11-43.
Any info on RM Mathieson will be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Roy,

    www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-WH2-2RAF-c12.html - New Zealand lists him as S/Ldr within 2nd TAF 1944.

Maybe he gets a mention in the 2nd TAC books (Shore/Thomas) will take look and report again as I am presently being entertained by the CoI.

    Default S/L RM Mathieson

    Hi Ian,
Thanks for that, I wonder if his later 1944 promotion to S/L was with 222 sqn.
To confuse maters there was another pilot, F/O Robert McCullum Mathieson 178787 in 1944.
Any help sorting who the F/Lt RM (Russell Maurice ?) on 130 sqn in April 1943 wouls help.
    Thank Ian and Sir,
    Roy

    Hi Roy,

A S/Ldr R M Matheson (note spelling of surname) listed as CO 222 sqdn May to October 1945.

Nothing found in 2nd TAC book index.

    Regards,

    Ian

    Default S/L RM Mathieson

    Hello Errol,
Many thanks for your help on 'Russ' Mathieson, which fills a lot of gaps.
I must seek where he did his OTU before 66, 130, and 222sqns.
We are so lucky to have so many people wishing to help on this forum.
    Many thanks,
    Roy

Hi, I know this thread is a couple of years old. My name is Mike and I am Russell's grandson. I currently serve in the RNZAF and was wondering what other information you might have on his career? As he was RAF our NZ records are limited. I would love any information regarding his time during WW2. Kind regards, Mike

    Mike,

Your grandfather was a member of the RNZAF and only temporarily attached to the RAF, so what you need to do, if you have not already done so, is request a copy of the papers that survive on his RNZAF service record as held by Personnel Archives, NZDF. See here for details:

    http://www.nzdf.mil.nz/personnel-records/nzdf-archives/

From the postings information recorded on the papers you may then be in a position to seek additional information from other sources (such as via this forum).

I have a copy of Behind The Spitfires by RAFF [William John ("Bill") Hooper], 1st Ed, 1941, Methuen & Co Ltd. It contains about 90 signatures spread over 29 pages. Most are 190 Squadron personnel; some are 19 Squadron. The flyleaf looks like it's been signed by F/Lt R M Mathieson.

If you're interested, I will scan the whole book and post a Dropbox link.

    Regards, Trevor Baker
