    Default 12 Aug 1943 - Ramrod 196 - fighter escort

On this day North Weald Wing (331 and 332 Squadrons only as far as I can gather) is involved in Ramrod 196 as Forward Target Support to 36 Marauders bombing Poix (a popular target of the day), cf.

Does anyone have ideas to with other RAF or USAAF squadrons was involved in escorting these Marauders to and from Poix?

416 (Can) Squadron records one Spit lost on the day (F/O Finlay, safe). Foreman, FC War Diaries, does not mention this operation at all.

    Mikkel,

Fighter Command was involved in a lot this day and I suspect it was in support of the USAAF operation in Germany. Contact me off-line please.

    Hi Mikkel

    Here you are:

    Target - Poix Airfield, Picardie
    Bombers - 36 Marauders USAAF; 36 dispatched, 33 bombed
    Casualties - 12 Marauders CD/AA
    Escort - Coltishall: 118 & 611 Squadrons (Spitfire Vb) & Merston: 402 & 416 Squadrons (Spitfire Vb)
Escort Cover - Westhampnett: 41 & 91 Squadrons (Spitfire XII)
High Cover - Biggin Hill: 341 & 485 Squadrons (Spitfire IX)
Forward Target Support - North Weald: 331 & 332 Squadrons (Spitfire IX)

Poix Airfield was reached at 10:56 where the bombers dropped one hundred and sixty-one 500 lb. GP bombs with good results. Although bursts were seen to fall in the northern dispersal area, some were also seen in the fields to the southwest, and six aircraft, seen on hard standing on the western side of the airfield, were also not hit. However, accurate Flak was experienced and a third of the bombers sustained some form of damage.

I can send you the 11 Group ORB Appendix for the operation if you wish.

    Regards
    Steve
