Default Two More of My Locals

    Hello All,

OK, another couple of my “locals”. Does anybody know anything about these two (obviously I’ve got the CWGC, GRO, rafweb, and various BMD database entries).

1 1320113 LAC Cyril Francis Johnson, died 23 Oct 42, buried Oudtshoorn Cemetery. Was at 45 Air School in the Western Cape of the (then) South Africa. Highly likely (from rank and location) he was training to be aircrew – but in what speciality? Also, I can’t get his UK Birth Reg to come up.

2 1193299 LAC Leslie Charles Lawrence, died 15 Jan 43, buried Barkingside. He was 36 – bit old for an LAC? Are we talking Balloon Command? – and/or, maybe, an Air Raid?, or was it just DOAS?

As usual, any - even tiny - pointers will be very welcome.
    TIA
    Peter Davies

Download AIR 54/173_1 for free from the TNA website.

Where it is revealled that LAC C F Johnson a Pupil Observer was injured and subsequently died as a result of a bomb being released accidently while he was removing the pin.

45 AS ought to be in the SAAF ORB's free on the TNA, check out Ross's guide to those documents it might answer your question.

C F Johnson was aged 20, so born 1921-1923, there are two birth in index for 1922
Cyril F - Canterbury - mothers name Laws
Cyril F - West Ham - mothers Name Webber

Checking the marriage index, Francis W Johnson married a Mary Webber in West Ham in .... bugger... 1939. i forgot to check the date before I started typing.

Thanks Ross for info on JOHNSON; he was in my files but missed what caused his death.

Peter: LAWRENCE is still on my unaccounted list as "Killed on Active Service", his death registered at Eastburne, Sussex.

    Regards,
    Henk.
