Default RAF Acklington 1952 - off topic request

    Hi all,

I would like to ask for help in following matter.
According to one memory book in RAF Acklington were flown Meteors and Vampires and also Tempests. What kind of units were based at this base in 1952? It is believed Tempests were used for towing targets for practical shooting of jets?

Many thanks in advance for any info

    Default Acklington Tempests

Acklington Armament Practice Camp (later Station) operated Tempest TT.5 aircraft between March 1950 and January 1953. They were used for towing drogues for air-air gunnery practice and carried code letter 'WH' plus individual numbers between 1 and 20.

One more question - was at the time some similar unit at RAF Pembrey? In memories of this pilot is mentioned that there was created a "new training unit" there and he was flying some Tempests there.

    TIA

Would this be in September 1952? 233 OCU was set up at Pembrey then.

    Good shot Amrit! Many thanks!
I suppose it fits as he mentioned he was flying there one Tempest "few days before Christmas" in 1952.

    Default 233 OCU Tempests

233 OCU contued flying Tempest TT.5s at Pembrey until July 1955; it was the last unit to fly Tempests in the RAF. The majority of its aircraft were ex-Acklington Tempests.

    Hi all,

North East Aircraft profiler, Simon Glancey, has a fantastic colour profile of Tempest from the APC at Acklington.

    Check out his site at:

    http://www.neaa.co.uk/tempest.html

    He also does commissions!
