    Default 420 Squadron Hampdens

A reader of my web pages has found a possible error concerning two Hampdens that may may both served with 420 Squadron: AE248 and AT248.

Can anyone quote some original RAF records on these two aircraft, confirming or denying their time with 420 Squadron and the date of their loss? I already have what Chorley said about AT248, and what Griffin and Kostenuk said about AE248.

    Dear Bill
Harry Moyle "The Hampden File" states

AE248 50/144/420 (PT-A) 2-3/7/1942 Shot down by night fighter near Kodum, F/Lt K Brown RCAF (POW), Sgt R Williams, Sgt J Waddington and Sgt Whytock RCAF (All buried Koudum, Netherlands) Bombing Bremen.

p38 "Sergeant WK McDermid arrived on 420 Squadron on 13th March 1942 and had trouble with icing up over England on return from an op, his rear gunner bailing out (he survived and returned to operations). Then a few weeks later in AE399, when landing from an op, he developed a swing when landing and crashed into a 44 Squadron Lancaster. This resulted in his being seriously injured and his navigator being injured. His wireless operator, Sergeant JN Waddington, had been with him in the icing up incident but his change to another pilot after Sergeant McDermid became a casualty did not change his luck. He failed to return in AE248 and is buried at Koudum, in Holland."

AT248 Converted to Torpedo Bomber 415/5OTU 4/6/44 Struck off Charge

Handley Page Hampden and Hereford Crash Log by Nicholas Roberts

    I hope this is helpful

Thanks very much James. Can anyone confirm this information from RAF records (ORB or aircraft records)?
