    Default Siren Raids 1944

I am currently researching a pilot from 139 Squadron who's DFC recommendation quotes his work in ANTI MORALE RAIDS over German during 1944. I am having difficulty in finding much about the policy or history about such raids. Any pointers would be warmly received. Thank you. Colin.

    Colin,

Perhaps it has something to do with this story? Found it on the RAAF museum website:

"Many other raids followed and some were designed more for effect than destruction. On 31 January 1943, RAF No 105 Squadron became the first Mosquito Unit to bomb Berlin. Hermann Goering, head of the Luftwaffe, was due to address a parade in the morning and the raid effectively disrupted it. Not content with this, aircraft from RAF No 139 Squadron went to Berlin in the afternoon and gave the parade being addressed by Dr. Goebels the same treatment. This action very effectively discredited Goering's boast that no enemy aircraft would fly unscathed over Berlin."

    Regards,

    Leendert

    Hi Leendert.

Thanks for the reply, the recommendation quotes "The majority of his sorties however have been completed in the role of anti morale raider and have been carried out against many of the enemys most heavily defended targets"

The Squadron records indicate that between two to four Mosquito aircraft took single 4000lb bombs to various targets. Maybe these were developed from those you have mentioned, its an interesting subject.
