    Default 68 Squadron RAF Accidents

    Hi all.
In the book "TIRPITZ - The Halifax Raids" (authors Nigel Smith and John Foreman), I found two 68 Sqn aircraft accidents. Please help me identify the accident date and the machine. (In the book are many inaccuracies)

First: 68 Sqn Blenheim L1052 Crashed on take off from Catterick. P / O Major and crew unharmed.
    (L1052 - no. Spitfire)
(The accident was probably between the dates of 02/22/41 - 04/23/41).

Second: 68 Sqn Blenheim P8373 Crashed landing at High Ercall. Sgt McLean and crew safe.
    (P8373 - no. Spitfire)
(Sgt Sgt McLean will probably Sgt McClean)
(The accident was probably between the dates of 04/24/41 - 06/12/41).
Can anyone help? Does anybody know the truth?
    Regards
    Pavel

    Hi Pavel

    Blenheim L1052
F1180 was raised 11 April 1941. Serial entered was L1052 but below is the annotation L1502?

    Blenheim P8373
F1180 raised 3 May 1941. Serial entered is P8373 (Type is listed as Blenheim I so most probably L8373)
    Sgt A C McClean, 745032

    Pavel,

    Good morning,

Numbers quoted above are - as you suggest - Spitfires, I think.

    Try the following:

25 Feb 41 L1178 damaged at Catterick. No details but not recorded in 68 Sqn ORB.

23/24 Mar 41 L1207 crashed near Malton Yorks. Sgts D KIRKLAND, J FORSTER and D TAYLOR all killed.

17/18 May 41 L8675 crashed near Ruddington Nottinghamshire. P/O BUTCHER and Sgt WISKAR killed.

This information comes from Bristol Blenheim A Complete History

I think there is an error in ' Blenheim' (also ABS) in respect of the entry for L8675. Both Butcher's and Wiskar's deaths are registered at Wellington Salop. I have the crash site as '100 yards south of the railway line and south of the old sugar factory. Allscot, Wellington.' This is about 3m south of High Ercall.

I've looked at the F1180 for the crash of L8675 before.

It records the crash as 1.5 miles south of Roddington Village.

This is a misprint for Rodington in Salop not Ruddington in Nottinghamshire as recorded by others.

Thank you all for trying to help me. Today is my lucky day. Cases I considered irrecoverable. Ross solved everything. Numbers Blenheims are 68 Sqn. Once again, thank you very much.

    P. S. Just Sgt A.C. Mc Clean (745032) is a mystery. The AIR 78 or the London Gazette not.
