Thread: Vouzières or Vouziers?

    Default Vouzières or Vouziers?

Norman Franks' 'Fighter Command Losses 1939-1941' (2nd edition) has Hurricane L1681 of 1 Squadron being shot down on 15/05/1940 'near Vouzières'. Which I can't locate via Google or Google Maps.

Could this be the town of Vouziers in the French Ardennes?

The same books names 'Rethal' as the place where Hurricane ?, JX-P from 1 Squadron, P/O Billy Drake, was shot down, on 13/05/1940. Could it be that 'Rethel' is the correct place?

    Regards,

    Bart

    Hi Bart,

have tried Google Earth and Vouzières does not exist, only Vouziers.
The same result with Rethal, only Rethel exists.

In primary sources like ORB etc. are mistakes in names of places like these quite common.

    Hello Pavel,

Thanks! I understand that in the ORB's mistakes like these occur; what I don't understand is why these are not corrected in the revised second edition of FCL.

They are one and the same place. Vouzières is the old name, which seems to have been retained by the British even though the French themselves changed it at some point. There are plenty of references to Vouzières in WW1 accounts that refer to that same place.

As for Google Earth - I've found that it is useful but not definative, and one should use it with caution. And FCL will use the names of the period rather than modernising them.

Thanks Amrit - that explains a lot. It means that every time Vouzières is mentioned I also have to mention Vouziers (or the other way round), will the young and the innocent be able to locate it. :)
