Default Ferry Command Abbreviation - NSATC and route questions

    Hi All,

Just trying to decipher the abbreviations on another flight assignment card.

The man's itinerary was as follows:

30 Sep 1943 West Palm Beach 2 Oct 1943 West Palm Beach
2 Oct 1943 Trinidad (Waller Army Air Field) 3 Oct 1943
    3 Oct 1943 Belem, Brazil 4 Oct 1943
    4 Oct 1943 Natal, Brazil 6 Oct 1943
    6 Oct 1943 Ascension Island 7 Oct 1943
    7 Oct 1943 Takoradi, Gold Coast 8 Oct 1943
8 Oct 1943 Accra, Gold Coast 9 Oct 1943 NS (?) Air Transport Command
    12 Oct 1943 Miami, Florida 13 Oct 1943 Train

NSATC is obviously some branch of Air Transport Command, but what NS is I can't figure out.

And can anyone explain the various stops in Africa? I know Takoradi and Accra were stops on the normal route to Africa, but why would he go to both of them? Was it to deliver an aircraft and then pickup a return flight to Miami, probably in a B24?

    Hi

Takoradi was the starting point of the ferry route for fighters and twins to Khartoum.
Accra was the terminus of the route for multi engined aircraft, which then routed from there to Kano, Nigeria and afterwards direct to Khartoum on a 1700 mile leg. It was the point of departure for ferry pilots returning west via Ascension and Natal, either by Liberator or Boeing Stratoliner, so I guess after a delivery to Takoradi a quick shuttle to Accra was necessary to get home.
Whilst possibly simplistic, ns is used by airlines today as meaning nightstop, which is what your guy appears to have done before flying out.
    regards
    Peter

Thanks Peter, that seems to work. He was ferrying Ventura GRVs from the US, so that would explain the arrival at Takoradi, then on to Accra to pick up a return flight home.

What was the route back, a straight run from Africa to Florida? It doesn't seem to indicate any stops at the way points you mention.

The usual route was via Ascension Island (where there was a good trade in booze apparently!) and then Natal in Brazil , Belem, Trinidad and Miami. I believe though that some Libs operated direct Accra to Nassau, Bahamas and then to Miami. It does seem to have taken him 3 days.
The route may not be mentioned as he was a passenger. Perhaps ns just means something simple like non service.

Thanks again Peter. This helps, not only with this fellow, but with his three fellow alumni who were lost while serving with ATC.

    Hi,

To illustrate this thread, I have uploaded 4 images showing the ferry routes from both USA and England. Hope this can have your interest.
