    Default 1112554 Sgt A SMITH.

    Hello,

Hoping that someone with access to AIR 78, can provide me with the full name of - 1112554 Sgt A SMITH RAFVR. Appears not to be a casualty, or a PoW. Unable to access the AIR 78 data myself, just at the moment.

    Any help appreciated.

    Hi Col

AIR 78/145 part 1 page 1388 gives it as Albert.

    Ross,

Thanks for that. A great help.

Smith was involved in the following incident:

    5-5-1942
    No.14 OTU
    Hampden I P1351
    Training.

Took-off 2319 Saltby for night flying practice and climbed, normally, to 500 feet. However, on raising the flaps, the Hampden yawed and lost height, coming down within a minute about two miles SW of the airfield. On 25/26-6-1942, now flying with 50 Squadron, Sgt Peters RAAF failed to return from Bremen.

    Crew (Alpha order):

AUS403405 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Deryck Worthy Trevor GIBLIN RAAF - Injured (Later DFC, 408 [RCAF] Sqn)*
    109500 P/O ( - ? - ) David Ernest JARVIS RAFVR
    AUS12419 Sgt (Pilot) Jasper Stormond PETERS RAAF (+ 26-6-42 - 50 Sqn - Manchester L7289. see:BCL3/135)
    1112554 Sgt ( - ? - ) Albert SMITH RAFVR

Chorley (BCL7/112), identifies only PETERS RAAF, in his crew list.

    * For more on GIBLIN RAAF, see: BCL4/43 - 14/15-2-43 - 408 (RCAF) Sqn - Halifax DT750.

A bit more info for you from the F1180

Pilot ok but all three crew listed as injured in crash.

Pilot raised flaps at 500', aircraft went into the characteristic "Hampden stabilised yaw" Stalled due to the aircraft skidding at relatively low airspeed caused by faulty flying. Out of control down to 200' before pilot crash landed.

    Ross,

    Thanks.

Bill Chorley does mention three injured, but completely omits mention of fourth crew member.
