Hi Steve, can't add much, other than that his birth is registered in Derby in the 1st quarter of 1917 (although no middle initial given) and that Vipan was his mother's maiden name. Parents' were Norman Herbert and Mildred Ada Glew.

    That's all I can offer!

    Cheers,

    Tom

    Steve,

He enlisted as trainee pilot joining with the rank of AC2. I know of another RAFVR pilot enlisting 2/12/1938 742649 being made Sergeant 3/12/38. His pilot wings would come on completion of his flying training. In his case 30.1.1940 11 FTS Shawbury.

Glew was killed in Hurricane KX929. Hs casualty card states loss due to FB Flying Battle - Enemy Action which disagrees with AB serials which has a flying accident. Source Air Historical Branch when it was there to help not hinder which appears to be its modern mission statement

Default Sgt Glew - 72 Sqn

Sgt Glew arrived on 72 Sqn with Sgts Gilders, White and Rolls along with Plt Off Males on 19 June 1940 at Acklington. He was nicknamed 'Sticky' by his compatriots. He shared in the destruction of Messerchmitt 109 WNr,1969 coded 2+ of 4/JG2 flown by Unteroffizier Dilthey on 23 Sep 40. On 8th Oct 40 he had engine trouble in Spitfire K9847 and force landed at Holstead. On 8 Nov 40 Glew and Gilders were posted to 616 Sqn at Kirton in Lindsey.
