    Default Supermarine Spitfire L1060 28-AUG-1940

Has anyone got a pilot for this incident on 28th August 1940 when it dived into the beach at Hoylake, Cheshire

    Paul,

    Wed 28 Aug 1940
    Fighter Command
    Training
7 Operational Training Unit, RAF (Hawarden, Flintshire - 10 Group)
Spitfire I L1060 - stalled and crashed into the water or onto the beach at Hoylake, 3 miles west of Birkenhead, Cheshire. The pilot is buried at Hawarden.
Pilot: 42136 Plt Off Michael Ernest Brian MACASSEY, RAF - Age 23. 371hrs. 2 ops.

Note that it is not clear if the aircraft crashed onto the beach or into the water (prehaps a bit of both!).

Info to hand since the above was published: crashed at 2010 after it 'went into dive after steep turn at 2000 to 3000 feet from which it did not recover' (source: NZ Defence Force file on Macassey).
