Default Hurricane '3803' of 501 Sqn

    Gents
Hurricane '3803' is listed in the ORB of 501 Sqn since 18 August 1940. However Hurricane P3803 SD-Z was lost on 12 August 1940 over the Channel. As I have '3803' listed as SD-Z after the loss of P3803, I presume it to be a replacement aircraft with the same code, but unknown serial, unless of course, it was not P3803 actually lost on 12 August. There was also a Hurricane P3083 SD-E, this was damaged on 7 August 1940 but it seems it was repaired within a week or two, its codes being not replaced, and irt could not have been confused for '3803'. In the meantime, there was a short lived P3882 SD-E that was on the Squadron for few days in the mid-August.
Any clue on real identity of '3803' SD-Z?

Just to add to the confusion....................

Watkins and Listermen s booklet on 501 lists the aircraft lost on 12.8.40 with F/O Lukaszzewicz as P3803 SD-H

This same aircraft is listed as being used by SL Hogan on 20.7 to destroy a Bf 109, so maybe ORB will confirm that? This was off Portland Bill and was his first victory. Aces High confirms the serial and shows damaged claims with same on 12, 16 and 18th August., ie beyond your 12/8 possible loss.

From same source.................P3084 SD-E was lost on 12.7 P/O Hewitt, P3083 has claims for 2 Ju 87 listed on 29 July as SD-E P/O JAA Gibson, although Aces High lists this as SD-I, and finally P3582 was lost as SD-E on 15.8 F/L JAA Gibson.

    Hope there's something in there

I do not think it could be confused more, it is just confused enough.
ORB of 501 Sqn lists serials only, and the only source of tie-ups are photos, and quite rare log books, where pilots listed code letters.
I do not know the source of Watkins, but my papers indicate 3803 Z through the whole August. Also, V7230 SD-H is listed through the period.
    I have P3582 SD-E listed on 14 August, indeed.
Then later in the month I have L1578, this was lost with F/O A.T.Rose-Price on 2 September, and in the mid-Spetember V7498, which was force landed on 4 October by Sgt J.H. Lacey at Ockley Manor Farm.
Now, I wonder if it was P3083 recoded to SD-Z, and thus causing the confusion.
If anyone has aircraft movement cards for those aircraft, it should help.
