Default Air efficiency medal. Wartime service ?

    Hello all,

    Can anyone help?

My grandfather joined the RAFVR in April 1939 and was KIA in December 1944. I have heard that for the Air Efficiency Award you needed 10 years service , but in wartime it was 5 years service which was then doubled. Is this true ? If so would my grandfather qualify for this medal.

    Many thanks
    James

For service which began before 3 September 1939, service if a flying duties category during WW2 counted as treble time for the 10 years requiement of the AEA. Other service counted as double time. You don't say in what role your grandfather was killed, but the mathematics suggest that whatever his role, he was entitled to the medal.

    Regards
