    Hi Alan,

Having a bit of difficulty positively identifying a few RAAF types. I have the following information:

    20/21-6-1943
    No.142 Sqn.
    Wellington X HZ311

Aircraft detailed to bomb Railway Yards at Naples. Ran short of fuel on return, engine cut, and aircraft ditched 6 miles NE of Ras Mustapha.

AUS408515 Sgt (Pilot) Henry Lincoln PLEYDELL RAAF - Injured (Later O35809, MiD)
AUS413980 Sgt (Nav.) Howard Walter GEE RAAF*
    - - - ? - - - Sgt (Bomb Aimer) A E EVANS RAAF
    - - - ? - - - Sgt (W.Op.) J SLATER RAAF
    - - - ? - - - Sgt (Air Gnr.) J LYNCH RAAF

    Crew rescued by No.283 Sqn Walrus. (Beyond Courage/Franks pp.23 & 172).

    * Howard Gee, died from injuries sustained in a motor accident on 25-12-1945. He was on the strength of No.38 Sqn RAAF at the time of his death.

Have what information is available from the NAA, DVA Nom. Roll etc.

Looking for service numbers/forenames of, Evans, Slater and Lynch.

Any information/confirmation of the above from the ORB, would be most appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Col.

    Col,
    I'll be back.
    Col,
Alas, no Service numbers/forenames in book, but notice that in all crew lists, Evans is listed as just "E" and not "A E".

    Alan,

Thanks very much for that. Not much to go on, but more than l had before.

If l get desperate enough, l'll get Pleydell's files digitsed. His A9300/1 has been amalgamated with his undigitised post-war A12372 personnel file.

    Much appreciated.

    Col,
Took a chance on the AWM site and found a mention of this crew, with photo, and looks like two of them were not Aussie's. It also shows (despite the ORB entries) that Evans first initial was "A", as they have the following....
    Arthur Evans, Wales.
    John Slater, Sussex.
    Tom Lynch, Toowoomba.

    AWM "ref" SUK1105.

    Alan,

    Nice One! Thanks.

    The picture ID is actually:

    http://cas.awm.gov.au/item/SUK11051

Helps explain why a couple of them were not turning up on the DVA Nom. Roll.

Sgt Tom Lynch is actually, AUS414807 Thomas Joseph LYNCH RAAF. Served later as Tail Gunner (P/O.) with No.460 Sqn RAAF. Shot down 27/28-4-1944, Lancaster III LM523:AR-L2 - PoW - BCL5/198.

Lynch was one of the well-decorated crew (and sole-survivor), depicted in Stella Bowen's iconic painting, 'Bomber Crew':
