Default Flight Engineer: P/O Earle George Dolby, RCAF. 97 Squadron

Earle George Dolby was the Flight Engineer for 97 Squadron Lancaster OF-L - JA916 which was shot down over Berlin, 31st August 1943.

I have two accounts of Dolby's death, this web site http://www.97squadron.co.uk/Crew%20Burns.html states that "Dolby made it safely to the gound, but was beaten to death by irate civilians."

However a researcher in Germany contends that "The F/E was shot in abdomen. He baled out, but was found dead in the morning (5.00 hrs local) of 1.9.43 at Neuhof near Wünsdorf (died of internal haemorrhage)."

Can anyone clarify which account is correct?

    Regards, David

    David,
Why not try getting in touch with David Cheetham and ask where he got his information from, concerning the death of Dolby by civilians.

    David,
Google canadian service records, and visit the Canadian national archives website, they have the details how to get RCAF service records.
