    Default Robert Lowe DFC

Back in the mid 1970's Robert Lowe built a VP-1 - G-BDAH - and he related the building of the aircraft in a pamphlet type publication published by PFA in 1977 entitled "Enjoy the Sky". He then went on to write a much more detailed book entitled "Build & Fly your own plane" in 1980 a copy of which I have just obtained. In this book he only mentions about his wartime RAF flying in such aircraft as Spitfires & Mosquitos.

Could anyone provide details of his RAF career and his award of the DFC please.

LOWE, Robert William, Warrant Officer (657895, Royal Air Force) - No.635 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 18 August 1944. Citation in Air Ministry Bulletin 15673.

"Warrant Officer Lowe has taken part in many sorties against many strongly defended targets in Germany during the course of which his aircraft has suffered severe attacks from enemy fighters. He has always displayed a high standard of courage and devotion to duty, and his ability as an air gunner has been a prominent factor in the successes of his crew."

    Hugh,

Afraid you have the wrong man. Same name, but No.635 Squadron operated Lancasters in Bomber Command. 50283 Robert William LOWE, flew Spitfires and Mosquitoes ie, No.680 Squadron.

657895 W/O (Air Gnr.) Robert William LOWE RAFVR, was killed 5/6-7-1944, in No.635 Sqn Lancaster III ND895 - BCL5/318.
