Default Sub-Lieut Harold West, FAA, HMS Victorious 1944-45, flew Seafires & Corsairs

Sub-Lieutenant Harold West, Fleet Air Arm. Flew fighters from HMS Victorious in 1944-45 (possibly 1834, 1836-38 Squadrons). Flew Seafires and Corsairs. Any information on him and operations he participated in would be appreciated.

Any input on sources for research would also be received with thanks. A check of the catalog suggests that the National Archives (Kew) only holds the ORB of 1837 Squadron for that time period. Would anyone know of any other sources (I know the FAA Museum holds some ORBs)?

    Thanks

    Hi David,

According to FAA Aircraft Ray Sturtivant, there was a pilot Sub/Lt H.West who served with 761 Sq. On 19/3/44 he was landing at Henstridge SS (Storage Section) in Spitfire 1a L 1056 when the Stbd u/c collapsed, prop blades tipped ground and aircraft was listed Cat. S ( Serviceable) usually within 48 hrs. He was uninjured.

Another incident involving Sub/Lt H.West occurred on 12/2/1945 When he had a barrier crash on HMS Striker in Corsair JT 538, Again he was uninjured. Aircraft was Cat. X2. Unserviceable but repairable later at a Service Station.

Not much but sounds like the same man. Hope this helps a little.

    Regards
    Dave

Many thanks. I believe both incidents are the same individual.

I wonder if the Corsair is the sad-looking one that appears upside-down at:

    http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/BPF-EIF/Galleries/Gallery_Striker_2.htm

This was T8-G an 1836 Sq Corsair II that had a landing mishap in Jervis Bay during 2/45 on Striker, while based as Nowra, having come from the Eastern Fleet.

Someone may be able to make out the serial.

Seems likely our man went from Striker to Victorious with a replacement aircraft during the British Pacific Fleet replenishment in late March 1945, most likely on 25 March.
