    Default 81856/116098 f/o j.o.b wraith kia ?

    Hi,

I'm checking the details of a navigator mentioned as Rhodesian air crew died WW2.

81856 F/O James Osborn Barker WRAITH KIA 6.10.42 OADU Wellington delivery flight commemorated Gibraltar Mem.

Now the October 1940 RAF List has him commissioned P/O 15.7.1940 RAFVR Admin & Special Duties (Intelligence Duties)

I also came across 1383735 Sgt James Osborn Barker WRAITH commissioned P/O 116098 14.3.1942 - F/O 1.10.1942 . The NCO number 1383735 seems to be an enlistment around the end of 1940 beginning of 1941.

Seems to be no London Gazette entries for either number after 1942

The same man ? If so did his service number change back to 81856, also if this is so shouldn't there be a mention in the London Gazette of his first commission being terminated. Or of his service number change ?

    TIA

    Mark, Hi,
This does seem to be one small area where Officer's Numbers might just be in a block?
I have a dozen or so Met Officers who came from, and/or went to, the S Rhodesian Air Force. They were Commissioned into the RAF(VR) Met Branch (Numbers between 80003(Cmd 30 Oct 39) - 80305(Cmd 26 Jun 42)). This last man Relinquished his Commission on 25 Sep 45 on return to SRAF.
Not a lot to go on, but might be a pointer?

Looks like either Administrative befuddlement or a probationary commission that was not confirmed

He appears as 81856 P/O (I) in the October AFL with seniority given as 15/7/40

In the next issue Dec 1940 his name only appears, service number, rank and seniority are all blank.

By Jan 1941 list he has been totally erased.

I suspect that the CWGC have picked up the previous commissioned service number for him and it should be recorded as 116098.

    Regards
    Ross

    Hi,

    Great stuff, mystery solved

I suppose the service number change is most likely an clerical mistake by the RAF.

    Thank you all
