    Hi,

    From F1180

    Acting F/L C D Hunt - BE423
    W/O S W Merryweather - BP754

    WALMER, KENT.
At about 2.50 P.M. on the 5th June, 1942, two aeroplanes collided, caught fire and crashed into the sea a mile and three-quarters east of the life-boat station. The sea was moderate, with a light northerly wind. The motor boat Terrier was launched, manned by the life-boat’s second-coxswain, assistant mechanic and a member of the crew. On nearing the spot they saw an airman floating in the sea, and directed
a speed boat to him, which very quickly rescued him. - Rewards, 12s. 6d. to one man; the services of the others, being Deal men, were reported to the local Bevan Trustees.

Slight problem with Merryweather. His Enlistment - from Civilian - s/n (517691) would appear to have been issued some time after Oct 1939 yet he is recorded, on CWGC, as being RAF (rather than RAFVR). Also, I can't get his DFM to come up on the LG (anybody got Tavender to hand?) - but that's probably my banana fingers!!. Oct 39 to Jun 42 is good going from Civilian to W/O - must have been a very good Pilot?

    Yr other man is probably:
    HUNT, CLIFFORD DENNIS
    Rank: Flight Lieutenant
    Trade: Pilot
    Service No: 69433
Date of Death: 05/06/1942 Age: 22
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 174 Sqdn.
Grave Reference Sec. E.B. Grave 568.
    Cemetery CARDIFF (CATHAYS) CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of Ernest Edward and Gwenllian Hunt, of Cardiff; husband of Margaret Frances Hunt, of Heath, Cardiff.

The service number range 505001 to 549999 started issue to civilian entry to the Royal Air Force in 1925 and for the pre war period was the main entry batch for general entry.

Merryweather would have enrolled in the RAF under this batch rather than RAFVR of the expansion period.

Edit his entry in Wynn states entered RAF as ACH in 1934. Applied for pilot training and was accepted. Joined No.229 as qualified pilot in Oct 1939.

So a prewar ranker who had years of service in.
