Default Group Captain Derek Shannon Vaughan RAKE OBE, AFC 124494

    Hi,

Can anyone confirm that G/C. Rake flew with 20 Squadron in 1946 (as a F/Lt.) and went on to become the commanding officer of 51 Squadron flying DH Comets in 1959.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Russ

    Hi Russ

Derek was briefly a Flight Commander on 20 Sqn (Spit XIV & Tmpst II/V), based at Agra, India, from 14 April-31 May 46, where he delivered important despatches from HE The Viceroy of India to Regional Governors.

He became OC, 192 (ELINT) Sqn (Comet C2 & Canberra B6) at Watton on 7 Jul 58, but the Sqn was redesignated 51 Sqn on 21 Aug 58. He remained OC until 5 Sep 60, during which time he was awarded a Bar to his AFC.

I have a full biography of him in 'Blood, Sweat and Valour', which comes from Derek directly, if you're interested. He attended my book launch in London three weeks ago. May I ask your interest in him, please?

    Thanks
    Steve

    Thanks Peter and Steve,

Steve, my interest is purely academic, I have seen his signature in a logbook to a 20 Squadron pilot flying Spitfire VIII and XIVs' and again as OC in 51 Squadron, I was interested to know if it was the same man. Thanks again for your reply.
