    Default Spitfire PR.IV BL419 31 March 1943

It is recorded that Spitfire BL410 of 8 OTU failed to return from a sortie on 31 December 1943. There are several possible identities for the pilot on CWGC website, can anyone please provide details?

    Hello Keith,

You quote two dates in this one - the later one is correct.

BL419 IV 8 OTU Cat E. Failed to return. Pilot of weakly disposition and grounded by MO. Fair to assume a/c did not land in this country. F/Sgt AC Hall 413990 (Aus) killed (missing).

    Regards,

You can find more details about the loss of Flt Sgt Albert Cyrus Hall there:
    http://www.awm.gov.au/catalogue/research_centre/pdf/rc09125z017_1.pdf

The Spitfire serial is given as BP419 but it is not a valid Spitfire serial AFAIK.

    Hi,

I have my doubts about BL419. This aircraft was with 880 Sqdn RN and was declared Cat. X after a taxiiing accident at Machrihanish on 24/2/43.

I believe the Spitfire we are looking for is actually BR419, FTR from a training flight on 31/12/43 while with 8 (Coastal) OTU.

    Hi Keith

For my tuppence worth, I have a note from the Form 1180 (microfilm MFC 77/16/75) that the a/c serial is BR419 of 8OTU flown by F/Sgt Hall A.C. Aus.413990, which simply records "A/c failed to return not yet located 31-12-43".

As an aside a previous F1180 (microfilm MFC 77/16/51) records BR419 as "CB ops 2-8-42" whilst with 1PRU on a sortie being flown by F/Sgt Wright K.L. Aus.403176.

    Regards

    Default Spitfire PR.IV BR419 31 March 1943

Thanks all for the replies. I think Pierre is right - his info concurs with Morgan & Shacklady ('Spitfire: The History') at p247. Air-Britain RAF Serial BA100-BZ999 also says BR419 was lost on 31 March 1943.

I agree with Ian, most certainly the date of loss 31Dec'43.

Page 6 of his documents at the NAA in Australia confirm this and can be viewd here http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/scripts/Imagine.asp?B=5535404 The same page notes that he arrived from 3 SofGR at 8OTU on 12Oct'43 ruling out a loss in March.

    Kind regards
    Pierre
