    Default Landing Group X

    Hi,

Is there a list of the LG for the Middle East on the web ?

Where was the LG X (used by GC 1 Alsace) early 1942 ?

    TIA

LG-X (LG-206) was at Abu Sueir North. Egypt.

    Hi Bertrand
Peter has correctly identified LG X as being LG 206 at Abu Sueir North but Jefford's RAF Squadrons lists Airfields as well as Sqns and gives also LG 05/"X" LG a few miles ESE of Sidi Barrani as well . It might be a good idea to recheck your source in case there has been a confusion between what seem to be 2 distinct LGs with very similar designations. The only Sqn Jefford has as common to both is 203, but Jefford may not record what appears to be a Free French Sqn. If it comes to a choice between the two it must be the one at Abu Sueir as Sidi Barrani was in German hands for much of early '42 until after the Battle of El Alamein in OCT-NOV 42

    Default Lg X

    Hi Dick,

I think you are right and the choice must be at Abu Sweir. I enclose a link where I put an extract of an ex free French LB's pilot of GC1. It is well written LG X. Date is 20 april 1942

    Hi Bertrand
I have looked again via the Times Atlas of WW2 and discovered that the German Offensive that captured Tobruk and was stopped at Mersa Matruh did not begin until late May '42, so the Sidi Barrani area was actually behind Allied lines and not German in Apr '42. The LG16 mentioned via your link is a satellite of Fuka which is just to the W of El Alamein. Jefford's book gives 2 separate LGs (LG X and "X" LG)so it will depend on how accurately the entry was made in your source.

    Hi Dick

Claude Raoul-Duval did the flight between LG X and LG 16 in 1h45.

    Hi Bertrand
Sadly it doesn't help. Jefford gives "X" LG as Sidi Barrani and LG X as Abu Sueir with LG16 at Fuka as almost exactly between the 2!!! The Times Atlas doesn't have a scale for the map but it can be roughly marked out with a piece of scrap paper!! Sorry

    Bertrand,
Could this be of any help:
    LG.206 - LG.'X' (alt Abu Sueir North) - 30.37.0/N - 32.05.0/E

    Hi Henk,

Defintively Abu Sweir North. I browsed some books or articles written by ex GC 1 "Alsace" and all describe the Point X close to Abu Sweir.

    Sincerely

    Bertrand
