    Default Globe & Mail Archives

Do any of our Canadian forumites have access to the Globe and Mail Archives, please?

I see it is available online from various sources dating back to 1844, but cannot access it as I am not a member of the Toronto Library, for example, and therefore do not have a library card.

I would like to locate an article on a pilot's death that I believe appeared in the newspaper around the last week of September / first week of October 1940, and was hoping someone might be able to assist me, please, by possibly doing a look-up for me.

    Thanks

Go here and do a new search: http://heritage.theglobeandmail.com/PageView.asp
    It should work.

Steve, I have access to the G&M archive through my membership at the Ottawa Public Library. Keyword searchable, so I need a name.

    Cheers, Ken

    Hi guys

Thanks for your replies but my apologies for the delay in responding as I was away on business.

I am trying to find a report on the loss of Plt Off John Greer Boyle. I have seen an article on the web (http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/collections/virtualmem/photoview/2361921/34065) but would like to identify the newspaper it came from.

I was hoping it may be able to be found in the Globe and Mail, as I was unable to find anything on the Canadian Newspapers site (http://www.warmuseum.ca/cwm/exhibitions/newspapers/intro_e.shtml)

Dave, I got the search to work as you suggest, but was unable to find anything on my man. Perhaps it was just not in the G&M...? Thanks anyway; I will bookmark the site.

    Regards

    Hi Steve
Looking at the clipping with references to his school and address I would wager that the clipping came from the Ottawa Citizen.

    Steve,

Must agree with Dave. Perhaps even the old Ottawa Journal which went defunct in 1980. Both newspapers are on microfilm at the LAC.

But you can also email DVA in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and ask them to give you their source for the newspaper clipping on the CVWM site. I have asked them the provenance of certain photos which have appeared on their site and they have obliged:

    Thanks guys

I managed to find the Ottawa Citizien free online at http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=QBJtjoHflPwC&dat=19470429&b_mode=2& hl=en and was able to find the article I was looking for, in the 30 September 1940 edition.

Bit of luck, really, as they only have 17 out of 30 days in September 1940 and no editions from October 1940!

Thanks for the tips and pointers

    Regards
    Steve
