Default crash location several bomber losses 5-6 Sept. 1943 Mannheim raid

    Dear all,

I'm currently re-working the list of German Nachtjagd claims on the 5-6 September 1943 Mannheim raid, and on the matching of the Bomber Command losses to these claims, for the NJWD 2nd ed. For this purpose, I'm looking for the crash locations/details on cause of loss of the following 'heavies' (I already have all the details from Chorley's vol. on 1943 losses):

    -10 Sqn Halifax JD322
    -51 Sqn Halifax JD263
    -78 Sqn Halifax HR874
    -78 Sqn Halifax LW229
    -83 Sqn Lancaster JB118
    -106 Sqn Lancaster W4922
    -106 Sqn Lancaster DV182
    -419 Sqn Halifax JD410
    -427 Sqn Halifax LK636

    Any help greatly apreciated!

    Cheers, Theo

HR874 crashed 2km south east of Hochstetten near Mannheim, it had approached from the north in flames having been engaged by a night fighter. LW229 crashed near Hohenhecken, the crew believed they had been attacked by a night fighter from below but the local flak unit also made claims on it as it crashed close to their position.

    Hello Daz,

Splendid! Many thanks for sharing this info -I'll try and match these two losses to NJ claims once I've gathered more info.

I had a thought that HR874 was shot down by Hauptmann Karl Floitgraf but cant remember why or where I had got his name from. The crew were on their maiden operation.

My notes show one crew member on JD410 was taken prisoner. If someone can supply the name (perhaps from Chorley) you may find info in POW records.

    Hello and good morning chaps,

Many thanks for this useful information. Daz -I don't think that Floitgraf was the claimant of HR874, I have a good match to the following claim:

    Oblt. Werner Baake: 16 3./NJG1 Halifax 8 km. E. Germersheim: 4.500 m. 00.15 prob. 78 Sqn Halifax HR874

many thanks for the info, you are far more knowledgable than I in these matters, especially as I can't remember where I got the other chaps details from.
