EUGENIA ZAGAJCWSKA Polish WAAF

Does any member have details of the above WAAF. The only information that I currently have is that she died 22nd April 1946, is buried in Norwich Cemetery and apparantly died from drowning.

Any information greatly appreciated

Afraid I couldn't find out anymore when I was researching the back-ground of all the war dead in Earlham Cemetery, but the name on the headstone and in the GRO index of deaths was Eugenia Zagajewska.

As you can see, even as late as 2008, flowers were laid regularly at her grave

Further research on Google I found the following-

Born 7th September 1924 Col. M. Sokal Ostrow
Regt Polish RAF Technical Training Command, Lady secretary in the HQ of the Polish Forces in London
Date of Death 22/04/1946, Died by drowning
Grave Cemetery Norwich, Norfolk, Plot Section 54, Grave 223

Which leaves the question "Where and how was she drowned"?

There is no record that I could find on CWGC so unaware of the reporting authority. Are Polish RAF deaths in UK registered at the GRO?

As a Pole she would not be on CWGC but her death was registered in Norwich Outer, he name being spelt Zagajewska

Possibly the local newspaper would have carried the story. The Eastern Daily Press has an archive, but unfortunately not online:

Easter Day 1946 was 21 Apr. War over! Holiday? Maybe too much high spirits? Boating accident on Norfolk Broads? Just a thought.

Out of sheer interest I looked at the page (and the page after) in the Norwich Outer Register:-

Slizewski Wledzyslaw 21 Norwich Outer 4b 81
Zagajewska Eugenia 21 Norwich Outer 4b 81

The first name is a masculine spelling? So looks like Eugenia and a male associate were both Registered at the same time. The EDP is bound to have something on this (if it was a double tradgedy?). Our Polish correspondents may know something?
