PTS usually stands for Parachute Training School (and sometimes squadron). Does this fit in with any other details you have?

    Amrit/Munro,
Agree PTS is normally the shortened form of Para Training School/Squadron. But, having been involved in the para game for a few decades I never found there were ever 56 of 'em!!! Might be Physical Training School?

I think this will prove to be a misinterpretation of 56 PTC, which in full would indicate (I think!) Personnel Transit Centre. The RAF had plenty of these centres located around the world during WW2; they not only catered for the arrival and departure of personnel and their kit, but provided meals and accommodation, as they also acted as accommodation "holding" units until postings came through to units "in the field". I think a list of the PTCs is provided in the big book on RAF training and support units; no doubt an owner of one of these volumes will soon pop up on this thread to confirm or deny.

The Big Book confirms David's suspicions, I believe:

    No.56 Personnel Transit Centre
Formed 16.11.44 Ex No.3 Base Personnel Depot at Portici, Naples (dett at Gragnano); 9.46 Caserta; Disbanded 15.11.46.

    To Erroll/David:
It looks like your idea about No 56 P.T.C. stationed in Italy is right. The airman, who Im researching for was posted later to Brindisi-Campo Casale airfield to Special Duties Flight.

    thank you

    Munro
