    No.76 OTU
    Wellington X LN956

Crashed in the Arabian Desert on night navex. Survivors found and rescued in position 29.21N 31.57E, by No.294 Sqn Walrus (Z1778), piloted by F/L F S Stothard. The Walrus brought the survivors back to Heliopolis, although the front gunner died on the morning of the 28th.
The Wellington crew were lost and did not know whether they were over land or sea. The pilot, AUS415989 F/Sgt Ronald Geake JEFFERSON RAAF, lowered the undercarriage, but then came out of cloud too low and crunched into the desert floor at 02.53.

    Crew (Alpha order):
    1380491 Sgt ( - ? - ) K BEECHER RAFVR
    1813372 Sgt ( - ? - ) Arthur Henry BROWN RAFVR + Alamein Memorial
    1301397 Sgt ( - ? - ) D COOKE RAFVR
573806 Sgt (Flt. Eng.) Richard HALLUMS* RAF - Injured
637338 Sgt (Air Gnr.) Albert Edward HARRIS RAF - Died of injuries
AUS415989 F/Sgt (Pilot) Ronald Geake JEFFERSON RAAF
    1389956 Sgt ( - ? - ) James Harold PIRNIE RAFVR + Alamein Memorial

    * Hallums enlisted as a Boy Apprentice in June, 1926. He retired as a Sqn Ldr (57495), on 17-4-1977 - not a bad stint!

76 OTU also lost Wellington LP126, which crashed at Wadi Shari, on this night.

Whilst awaiting for someone to provide me with the information on LN956, l had a poke around, and found the rest of the story, here:
