Default Sptfire & Hurricane Mid-Air Collision, Turnhouse, 11 January 1945

A Spitfire from 290 Sqn and a Hurrican from 289 Sqn (last three of serial '323'), both Turnhouse-based, collided in the airon 11 January 1945; the Hurricane, flown by F/O Simmons, RCAF) force-landed safely at Turnhouse but the Spitfire crashed in a field after losing part of one wing, the Spitfire pilot survived. Does anyone know the two aircraft identities and the name of the Spitfire pilot please?

From the on-line Spitfire production list, the Hurricane was LF323 and the Spitfire was Mk Vb BL319.

    Keith,

The 290 Squadron Spitfire pilot was F/O R.G.H. Ballance (J.26388) according the ORB.
Airframe was declared Cat. E, engine Cat. B.

ORB says that Ballance "sustained injuries of non-dangerous character".

    Serials as in previous post.

    Regards,

    Leendert

    Additionally from the accident card,

    BL319 - Spitfire LF.Vb, Merlin 45M No 216518 - 290.Sqn (N/85.Grp/2.TAF/N), crashed cat.E in flight on 11.1.1945 (15:36h), F/O BALLANCE, Can (J26388 ) injured:
