    Default Barracuda P9969 7 Sep 1944

    Sturtivant/Burrow in FAA Aircraft 1939 - 1945

Gives a history of Barracuda P9969 as

769 Squadron, Eashaven, Stbd wing dropped landing, crashed Cat Z 7.9.44 (Lt JG Irvine DoI, Sgt C Tweddle RAF & LAF(L) S Powell both killed)

I can't see Tweddle or Powell on CWGC so I guess this was a typo. Also, don't seem to see Tweddle on casualty lists on Flight magazine.

What is LAF(L) rank? Leadingairman Fitter?

    Hi,

Royal Navy Casualties, killed and died, September 1944 confirms Ty/Lt (A) James G. Irvine, RNVR, killed in an air crash, 7 September 1944. HMS Peewit ( East Haven).

    http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1944-09SEP.htm

There are three Royal Navy and Royal Marines members listed in the deaths between 1939 and 1945 with the name of S. Powell, but none died in an air crash, or on 7/9/44.

It occurred to me that Sgt Tweddle might actually have been a Royal Marine but this line of inquiry drew a blank.

The letter L in brackets after a rating's rank stood for 'Electrical.' Leading Aircraft Fitter (Electrical) ?

Cheers, I had a look at that site myself.

Would FAAMuseum have the FAA equivalent of Form 1180s or someother useful source? Though I can only expect this is ambiguous leading to Rays listing in the book.
