Default Douglas Havoc AH463, crashed 03.08.41 near New Cumnock, Scotland

    Hi all,

Seeking details on the loss of Havoc AH463 near New Cumnock on 03.08.41. I have the pilot as F/O Francis Everett Bender who was killed. The aircraft was being ferried at the time when it struck high ground in poor weather.

I am assuming F/O Bender was the sole occupant but would like confirmation of this and also a more precise location of the crash site.

    Many thanks,

    Jim

    Hi Jim,
Can confirm that F/O Francis Bender was the only occupant, AH463 was on charge with 14FPP and crashed at Fardenreoch Farm spreading it's self over rising ground in a field. It looks like the area is now an open cast mine since we found the location in the mid eighties.

    Hi Alan,

Can't find Fardenreoch Farm on the map but I have located a farm called Farden about 3 miles SW of New Cumnock, I'm assuming this is one in the same?

I was hoping this would be the unidentified crash I have on Blackcraig Hill near Afton Reservoir, do you have any idea what this aircraft is?

Do you also have anything on Wellington LA974 at Glencaird Hill near Bargrennan? Hoping to have a look for this later in the year and it would now appear that Mustang AG386 is in the same area. A map reference for the site would be useful if you have it.

Bender's death was registered as 'near White Hill Farm', he was the only occupant of the aircraft but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an 1180, I've looked for it on two different visits to Hendon and Mark had previously requested a copy with the same result.

    Hi Jim,
Farm was Fardenreoch but is now an open cast site on the OS maps. crash site was at 562138. Thought I was going mad until I checked a pre 1988 OS map. The farmer at Fardenreoch remembered the crash and showed us the exact spot. The death register giving "near White Hill farm" probably was because White hill is or rather was on Fardenreoch's land and is about 1km west . The landscape and roads have all changed, only point of reference left is Dalricket.
Will send you a map tonight.
Never did find the Wellington or Mustang near Bargrennan. The crew details tie in with what I have.
Blackcraig Hill is a new one for me, we don't have anything listed in the area.

This is the only Havoc crash I know of in Scotland; I believe Bender was a 1st Officer in the ATA and is buried at Monkton & Prestwick Cemetery. He was ferrying the a/c between Abbotsinch amd Burtonwood.

I had Wellington LA974 as 2.5mls NNW of Bargrennan.
