    Sqdn Ldr Thomas Smart DFC* of 229 Sqdn, killed in action 12th April 1943.
    He baled out of his Spitfire EP716 but his chute failed to open over the Mediterranean.

    Alex, thank you for posting that on this anniversary of his loss. Do you have more information about S/Ldr Smart and his final operation? I for one would be grateful to be further educated about it.

    A little more,

    EP716 229.Sqn, sweep to Comiso airfield, Sicily but bombed a factory at
    Pozzallo instead, shot down in combat with Bf109G of III/JG27, S/Ldr Tommy Smart killed, baled out from 800 ft, over the sea 15 to 20 miles south of Pozzallo, but parachute did not open fully.
