    Default 458 Squadron - 27/28-4-1943

F/O (Pilot) Michael TUCKWELL - 137297, flying with 458 Sqn, was killed 27-4-1943 and lies buried in the Catania War Cemetery. He may have been on board of Wellington VIII serial HX570, lost this day from Luqa, Malta on a raid to Italy.
Looking for confirmation of the a/c serial and info on other crew.
    Regards and thanks,
    Henk.

    Henk,

    27/28-4-1943
    No.458 Sqn
    Wellington (serial - ? - )

Took off Luqa, 2359*?, on Shipping Search. Failed to return.

137297 P/O (Capt.) Michael TUCKWELL RAFVR + buried Catania War Cemetery, Sicily
1316142 Sgt (2nd Pilot) Thomas Eric MUSTO RAFVR +
R/53807 W/O (Nav.) Robert William Joseph HUDSON RCAF +
946569 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Kenneth Templeton BATES RAFVR +
1020882 (S.E. Op.) Walter Scott LEES RAFVR +
1020873 (Air Gnr.) James Reid HUNTER RAFVR +

All, other than TUCKWELL, commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

458 Sqn ORB (F.540): On the night of the 27/28th April, one special Wellington searching for enemy shipping in an area off the west coast of Italy was airborne at 2015 hours*. The captain was P/O Tuckwell, at 2325 hours, two medium sized merchant ships escorted by one destroyer were sighted in position 39.10N - 13.28E, course 270 and speed 8 knots. A sighting report was sent to base. This aircraft acknowledged a signal from base at 0184 hours but unfortunately it failed to return. The crew were: P/O Tuckwell (Captain), Sgt Musto (2nd Pilot), W/O Hudson (Navigator), Sgt Bates ((W/Optr), Sgt Hunter (S.E.Optr) and Sgt Lees (Rear Gunner).

    * Take-off time quoted in F.541 (2359) highly unlikely, especially since shipping was sighted at 2325! Note also, discrepancy of relative crew positions of Hunter and Lees.

    Col, Finn,

I've HUDSON, BATES, HUNTER, LEES, MUSTO - and also Sgt George LYLE - 1022822 - on Wellington VIII serial HX677, missing from shipping search.
Source: "They Shall Grow Not Old" (Allison) - page 341 - under HUDSON:
P/O (Pilot) Robert William Joseph HUDSON - J/17587 (R/53807) from Hawkesbury, Ontario. Wellington HX677 failed to return from operations. Sgts K.T. Bates, J.R. Hunter, W.S. Lees, G. Lyle and T.E. Musto (all RAF) were also killed.

    Regards,
    Henk.

    Default 458 Squadron - 27/28-4-1943

On date 2nd. April (1943), I've found following entry in 458 Sqn ORB Form 540 "

    Wellington.
    .X.150.S.

A type error? Could the Tuckwell Wellington "S" have the serial number HX510?

    Regards

    Hello Malcolm,

Yes, but MP150 is between MP113-158. According Robertson, this serial range is Hawker Typhon IB.
