on April 16th, 1944 an aerial accident occurred at 9 OTU (Aldergrove). The FF Sergeant Torres was killed at the end of his training. Do you have information on this incident, including what was the aircraft he was flying ? was he alone on board? what was the cause of this accident ?

    thanks by advance ...

    Hello,

Don't have full details, but here is a start:

    16-4-1944
    No.9(C) OTU
    Beaufighter X KW293

Crashed in open country, 2.5 miles NW of Caldbeck, Cumberland. Cause obscure, engine failure not suspected.

See:The Bristol Beaufighter Crash Log/David Smith (comp.).

This is what the No.9 OTU ORB recorded:

April 16th 1944, “Beaufighter KW.293, Pilot, Sgt G. Torres, Navigator, Sgt Ash, crashed near Caldbeck. The Pilot was killed and the Navigator injured.”

The OTU was stationed at RAF Crosby-on-Eden near Carlisle.

    Hi Pavel

Sgt Georges Torres was not a commonwealth airman he was No.30714 FAFL and so does not appear in the CWGC Online database. He is commemorated on the paper registers for Brookwood.
