Does anyone know of a website that gives details of AFC awards made prior to 1956.

I do not know of a website but I have quite a lot of information - very thorough to mid-1946, sporadic thereafter. Do you have some specific names with which I can assist you ?

If Hugh's records can't help you, then an online search of the London Gazette should.

However, there is a difference between immediate and periodic awards of of the AFC and AFM. The former type of award will often be accompanied by a citation whereas the periodic awards will usually merely be a list of names.

The RAF Museum (DORIS) also has a cardex system of awards, sorted by name and kept in manuscript but I don't know when they stopped maintaining it.
