Default Major J S Stormonth Darling 77297, Royal Artillery - DFC award?

    Hello everyone

I'm looking for some info on Major John Sayer Stormonth Darling, 77297, of the Royal Artillery, who was awarded the DFC, presumably whilst attached to 655 Sqn RAF. He died on August 1st 1945, and is buried in Udine War Cemetery, Italy. Looking on the LG website, the award was Gazetted posthumously on September 20th 1945.

    Couple of questions:
Was it unusual for a member of the Army to be awarded the DFC?
And can anyone track down the citation for the award?

    Regards

    Simon

There were quite a few DFC's awarded to AOP chaps and some DFM's to Army Glider pilots and RASC Air Despatchers serving aboard Dakotas for the D-Day and Armhem operations.

At least 2 Army officers received DFC & Bar and were later killed in action, from memory Ballyn was one of them and Molison (Molinson) was possibly the other.

    Thanks for the reply Pete

Now you mention it, I can see that by the very nature of the jobs, awards to AOP crew, Army glider pilots and Air Despatchers could be quite numerous!
