    Default 156 Sqn Lancaster JA674, lost 20/21.12.1943

    Dear all,

For the research of the Nachtjagd War Diaries 2nd edition, I have recently been working on the 20-21 December 1943 Frankfurt raid. One of the losses was 156 Squadron Lancaster JA674, which was hit by a German night fighter whilst on its homeward-bound flight at around 20.00 hrs, exploded and crashed near Laubach, 23 kms ESE of Giessen. The following German NF claim can be matched to this loss:

Uffz. Werner Rominger: 1 8./NJG3 Lancaster Nidda, 25 km. SE Giessen 20.07 156 Sqn Lancaster JA674

F/Lt. M.A. Sullivan DFC RNZAF and crew were all killed, all were decorated with the DFC or DFM.

I am looking for a photo of JA674 and of the crew (five of whom were RAAF), who can help?

    Cheers, Theo

    Dear all,

I've been informed that an air-to-air photograph of Lancaster JA674 has been published in the book LANCASTER AT WAR 5, on page 26, taken at a time when the Lancaster was captained by F/Lt Sullivan. Unfortunately I don't have this book in my library -can anyone provide me with a scan of this page and tell me what the source of this photo is?

    My email address is:

    Cheers and thanks, Theo

    Dear Theo,

I cannot help with this particular aircraft from 156Sq., but I can with the raid on Frankfurt of 20/21 December 1943. On this raid, my great-uncle's aircraft - Lancaster III (JB454) of 103Sq - was shot down by Ofw Rudolph Winn at, I think, 20.45hrs. Ofw Winn was apparently damaged after attacking this Lancaster, and may have been shot down by his own side whilst going back to land. There has been some confusion where this aircraft can down (Bomber Command Losses states Hagenwerder) but official records now state this was at Marjoss, some 10 miles ENE of Frankfurt-on-Main.

I know this is not concerned with the aircraft you originally mentioned, but thought this email might still be useful.

    Regards,
    Richard

    Hello Richard,

Here's a little extract from the manuscript of the NJWD 2nd edition:

Ten Nachtjäger (including six of the I. Jagdkorps) were lost during the night’s operations, four of which were lost in combat with Main Force bombers. One of these, a Ju88 C-6 of 1./NJG2 in the hands of Ofw. Winn (pilot), Fw. Kirschnek (BF) and Ofw. Rothehüser (BM), was hit by return fire from Sgt. R.W. Roberts, rear gunner of Lancaster JB454 of 103 Squadron, which Winn shot down at Marjoss. Attempting to limp back to Kassel-Rothwesten on one engine, the Nachtjäger was shot down by ‘friendly’ Flak near Kalmbach, the German crew all baling out safely.

Do you perhaps have a photo of JB454 and crew?

    Cheers, Theo

    Dear Theo,

Thanks for the information - and the detail on Ofw Winn. If I can remember correctly, he was shot down again only a few weeks later in which one of his crew, I think, drowned in the Elbe? Do you have a photo of Ofw Winn by any chance? In addition, do you think there might be any photos of the crashed JB-454?

With regards JB-454 crew photos, I don't have any of the crew, unfortunately. My great-uncle, who is still alive, might have one in his possession but like many Bomber Command veterans the war still remains a difficult subject to bring up. I do know that the 103 Squadron Association does have a photo of Sgt. Roberts.

    Regards,
    Richard
