    Default 76 Sqn Halifax LK911, FTR 20-21.12.1943

    Dear all,

On 20-21 December 1943, 76 Squadron lost three Halifax Mk.Vs during a raid on Frankfurt. Losses included LK911, I have the following match to a German NF claim:

    Hptm. Hubert Rauh: 10 3./NJG4 Halifax Trais Horloff, 3 km. S. Hungen 19.26 76 Sqn Halifax LK911

Can anyone tell me if a photo of LK911 and of its crew exist? Four of its crew were taken PoW; it would also be interesting if the PoW questionnaires are available.

    Cheers, Theo

    Theo,

It might be likely that the 4 POWs completed a Questionnaire on their return to the UK. These can be found in the WO344 series - the files are arranged alphabetically according to the airmen's surname. This can be a good place to start, as the airmen state where in the UK they are from.

    Regards,
    Richard

I'm sorry but I cant help you with a photo but it was also a bad night for 78 Sqn who lost 5 crews, my research has
LW271 EY S being the first of the 78 Sqn aircraft to be shot down, I believe that they were possibly the first victim of Oberfeldwebel Xavier Pflieger who claimed a Halifax north of Niederelbert, perhaps this helps to narrow your search.

There is a photo of LK911 in White Rose Base - my copy is on loan at the moment so cannot check whether the crew are on it
