    Default More LG deciphering difficulties...

    Hi,
Would any of you kind gentlemen be able to tell me what is meant by an LG entry like this:

The undermentioned are granted the substantive
rank of Flight Lieutenant, 1st Nov 1947, with the
    seniorities stated
    J. Bloggs (service no.) 7th Oct. 1946

What are the two dates given, and what do they mean by "seniorities"?
Also, has the Substantive status supplanted a rank of War Substantive because the war has ended, but does it still mean the same thing?

    Many thanks,
    Cally

One is the date on which the appointment is made and the seniority date is that which appears in the Air Force List and it is from this date that the person's position in the rank is determined ie it counts towards promotion, pay etc.

War Substantive ranks ceased on 1 Oct 1946 ??????? (not sure of exact date) and every officer's rank and seniority in the peace time air force was reassessed. All very complicated and still don't understand it all - someone else will tell you!!

Thanks for your reply Colin. This has made it much clearer now.
    Many thanks, Cally
